Whale Galaxy, NGC 4631
The Whale is a barred spiral galaxy full of details, seen from its side from our point of view. The Whale galaxy has a small companion, the tiny elliptical galaxy NGC 4627, which is visible just above the Whale. You may also spot another object around: NGC 4656/4657, most often called the Hockey Stick galaxy.
Crescent Nebula, NGC 6888
The Crescent Nebula is an emission nebula located in the constellation of the swan: Cygnus, about 5,000 light-years away.
Its structure and colors come from Wolf-Rayet 136, a hot star located in the center of the nebula ejecting its matter in the form of powerful stellar winds.
Lagoon Nebula, M8, NGC 6523
The Lagoon Nebula is a giant cloud of dust and interstellar gas emitting light in different wavelengths, which explains the richness of its colors (although to the naked eye, it is only visible in gray-green). The nebula is home to bright young stars that give the Lagoon nebula its brilliance, like the giant star Herschel 36, 32 times more massive and 200,000 times brighter than the Sun but hidden by thick clouds of dust.
